I came aboard the Joey in the middle of the Indian Ocean deployment in Feb of '75 (STGSN then) at Bahrain, served with a great bunch of folk. Looking over the crew roster brought back a lot of memories of people and places, things long ago consigned to memory and pigeon-holed with the other events from a long-ago youth. Brought a smile to my face and a tug at my heart. I recently bought a new house and in the process of packing up to move I found boxes of pictures and other stuff (my Shellback certificate from May 29, 1975...paid dearly for that but wouldn't trade it for anything) that had been stored for many years and never touched. Those too brought back a lot of memories. Just wanted to check in & say hi to all my fellow Hewes crewmates and wish you all the best of luck, I'll be checking back from time to time, Fsivo vam dobrava, menya druzhnee.

Assigned to A-GANG one of the best bunch of pirates and swabs that has been my pleasure to have been onboard any ship with. This group could and did accomplish the most difficult task. Like taking the after capstan motor down from the overhead using only a wire strap, or being the only division certified ready for PEB by desron 21. Some may wish to forget but it is a pleasure to remember each one of these swabs as the best bunch of liberty hounds that ever crossed the quarter deck.

I came on board the Joey a few days before the WestPac cruise. Also did the Med and Indian Ocean cruises on board. For those of you who remember me, I wanted to say Hi. For those of you who don't remember me, I was the chubby guy with the beard that paid you on payday. Serving on board was some of the best times of my life and also some of the worst. I partied pretty much my entire tour aboard so some of it is pretty hazy now. I do remember that I was a pain in the butt to the brass every chance I got. I can remember being thrown out of the Captain's cabin just about every payday when I went to pay him at sea, for being out of uniform. (I'm pretty sure it was Klee, but I might be wrong) I always wore my black Converse (Chucks) low cuts which the Captain didn't particularly care for. I have plenty of great memories that I will try to put on the Sea Stories page later. Drop me an e-mail if you remember me. To all who served aboard the Hewes I salute you!!

I would like to thank all of my shipmates who attended the 2007 Reunion for making it a very memorable event. It's hard to explain what a wonderful feeling it is to see my old friends. It's been 33 years since I saw any of them, yet, despite our ages, we remembered the past in such vivid detail. To all of you who attended, THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES. I will never forget this reunion and hope to attend more in the future. The hardest part of the reunion was saying good-bye.

I was browsing the web and placed the Hewes into Google, obtaining this website. I enjoyed reading these entries and remembering a time so long ago and yet, so near. It was a privelege to serve on the Hewes. The experience was invaluable and furthered my professional growth in many ways. I hope you are all doing well. May your future endeavors bring you fair seas and following winds.

Nice to see Steve Laidlaw on this site and Alex Constance. I'll have to try to make the next reunion, 07 is not possible. But the next one will be.

I am a plank owner and was on the commissioning crew in Boston, MA. I remember us being tied up across from Old Ironsides. That was kewl... I really enjoyed all the pre-comm training in Newport, RI and had a great time onboard. I was the first barber onboard the USS Hewes. That's my claim to fame. :-) Capt. Klee was the man and the XO was named Top, otherwise know as Chrome-dome. Here's to the commissioning crew of the Hewes.

It's hard to believe it's been sixteen years since I last walked the decks of "The Leader of the Class. But as I write soooo! many memories are just flooding back.sorry I missed the '05'and more thanlikely the '06' reunions.but there's always '07'By the way my caps off tothis great web site.well enough for now but I'm going to leave the crew from the 89 MED/IO with a little memory:I do not ask for easy sailing.Dear God,that's not my plea;I only pray for courage And strength to face the sea. To pull away from safety's shallows And face what lies out there,A stormy sky or gale forced winds I still will not despair. With faith I'll conquer tempests And find I've stronger grown, Then bring my vessel homeward In victory all my own. for those who have a cruise book you'll understand. if not e-mail me.Happy days & following seas from a Joseph Hewes BM3

This is a great site. I was on The Joey Boat from 92-94, and I have very fond memories of her. You sort of block out things like walking on the bulkheads during a North Atlantic storm, and remember the good things like liberty ports at places you'll probably never see again. If anyone knows where EMC Tamez or (then) LTJG Chow are shoot me an e-mail.

I came aboard as a pilot from HSL-32 with our SH-2F Seasprite. The Joseph Hewes was acting as Orange force against the America Battle Group during their workups for deployment. I was impressed with the crew, officers and enlisted, and especially the old salt in command. I have a bit of a sea story to share if its appropriate for a transient like myself. I would love to hear from any of the junior officers onboard during that time.

WOW!! This feels like an eternity ago when I was on the J.Hewes..alot of mixed memories. I will never forget standing shoring watch in the foward paint locker in 3ft of paint/water, only in the NAVY!! Med/IO was a blast.. wish I still had pics. From what I can remember the J.Hewes/Charleston took me in as a punk 18 y.o and made me a cynical/punk 22 y.o. Honestly.. It was great to stumble upon this site, alot of great stories and some great friends. I read that the J.Hewes was sold for $$$$2.8 m..is that all?? I think we spent more then that on p-way wax. The more I type the names are coming back.. Nice to see SKCS Petrey(best Chief on the ship, your presence/leadership was missed), OS3 Santiago(SSDF school was crazy), PN2 Podiac(always kept in-port watch full of laughs) and where ever you may be EM3 Knight, MS3 Lester, MM3 Yates, GMG2 Barnes, DC3 Cistunk, DC3 Klimko, STGSN Killian, SMSN Radkie (I hope the ranks are right, there were a few "incidents" driving on Dorchester if I remember) and..whoever else I forgot.... ISLE OF PALMS is still my favorite beach in the U.S, LONG LIVE "THE WINDJAMMER" GOD BLESS

After I left the Navy before the ship moved from Newport, I joined GE working for the navy nuclear program as an engineer, was promoted to project leader & program manager & moved to other military oriented divisions of GE in Daytona Beach & Wilmington MA. After 15 years with GE, I joined Product Genesis, a product development consulting practice in Boston, as senior VP for another 15 years and 3 years ago accepted the position of President of the US division of Scientific Generics an international technology consulting firm headquartered in Cambridge England. While with GE in Daytona, I stopped in to see the Joey in Charleston just before a Med cruise. My wife of 34 years, Barb, & I have 2 kids both out of college now. We travel a good bit with the job and stay active in music and several sports, including skiing, roller-hockey and sailing. I left the Navy in 1996 upon completing business school and have been in management consulting ever since.  My time on Joseph Hewes was without a doubt the finest experience I had in the Navy and amoungst the greatest professional experiences of my life.  The Blue "E" Supply Department was the best in the fleet!  Great crew...great CPOs...great Wardroom.

I've been happily married for almost 17 years, have two children (13 and 9), and am proud to say have have served "zero" duty since leaving the ship (if you don't count numerous all-nighters working for Accenture).

Was on board with the H-2 helos going to Vietnam.  On our way home we went around the world stoping off in Hong Kong, Recife, Brazil. Home port was NewPort, Rhode Island.   I'm still in the Navy (Reserves), just made Chief (at 53). Attached to HS-75 in Jacksonville, FL.  I am also a Civilian with the Naval Air Depot as an Aircraft Electrical Engineer on the H-60 helo.  Can't get away from the helicopters.  Great seeing this web page.  Sure does bring back a lot of memories.

Went to the Veterans Day celebration today at my kids school. Heard "Anchors Away" and thought I was gonna cry. Is that sick or what? Actually I was proud to stand with other shipmates young and old. I have great memories of that ship and was proud to serve.

Hey all, just figured it was high time I updated my email. It's great to drop in now and then and see who have found this Joey Boat site. What a trip. I have a niece in the Navy now. She's nuke. She'll probably make it a career. Like her uncle should have. Oh well. I was young and stupid. Now I'm  old and stupid. And I'm told there is no such rate as a BT anymore. We BT's are obsolete. Couldn't have happened about (can't believe I'm saying this) thirty years ago when I was one. Oh well.

Hey guys, checking in again to fix my email address. Can't wait to see you old farts at the reunion in Cocoa Beach, FL !! My favorite Joey boat food; the "Slider", with a tall glass of bug juice at MIDRATS after 6 hours of watch in CIC in rough seas, smoking cigars!

Joey, was a great tour! I took the job as Weps thinking we going to make a Med cruise and we went to Vietnam from our homeport in Newport RI. The gun fired great and the Lamps did NGFS spotting for every ship in the Gulf including us......no ASW! Wonderful memories and great shipmates!

I served on the USS Joseph Hewes from March 1992 to June 1993. I was a Quartermaster 2nd Class. I contacted a friend from my days onboard and she told me about your website.  I'm very impressed by the website and all the former shipmates names and e-mail addresses that you have managed to compile. Thank you for this great resource.  Although I spent a short time on the ship, my experience onboard was very rewarding and the scene of some my fondest memories of the Navy.

This is so neat, I had no idea the Joey had a web site. I guess I'm checking in. I was onboard from 1981-1985. I got on in Brooklyn when she was in the yards. I left as MM2 and served in M division. I am a civilian Firefighter. I am a Captain with the Fayetteville Fire Department in Fayetteville Arkansas. I have been here for 18 years.

There has been a lot of times I have thought about the guys from the hole. And the Med Cruise of 83 has a lot of great memories. Please let me know more info and I am going to check out the website more.

Just checking back in after a couple of years. I had hoped to be able to make the Reunions but scheduling conflicts got in the way. I still hear from Eric Weber periodically, and Mike Hess when he decides to be sociable. I have mostly fond memories of my time on the Hewes..the bad times were few and not worth mentioning. I got to see a big chunk of the world on the Med Cruise and there's nothing wrong with that. Would like to hear from those that served with me during that time period. Feel free to e-mail me anytime.

Spent 3 years as ASW officer (when we worried about such).  Relieved Miller, served under Newcomb and Barrett.  The unfortunate responsible for keeping Peters and Chechak in line.  Never successful, yet made LT anyway.  Went to work in 1985 for the company made famous by the Hewes Hip-Pocket towed array she deployed with in 74. Been there ever since trying to keep ASW alive in the new world order.  Have worked with RADL Joe Carnevale former COMMO and Gary Nelson, former CO.  Great site.  Shipmates drop me a line.....
